The Outlaw Josey Wales was based on the first novel written by a half-Cherokee Indian poet named Forrest Carter entitled The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales (the title was eventually changed to Gone to Texas). The book was published by a small company in Arkansas, and was likewise given a limited printing of only 75 hardcover editions.
