BIOGRAPHY: Maurice Elvey was o ne of the most prolific directors in British cinema history, directing over 300 feature films between 1917 and 1953. Elvey began his career on stage as an actor, and he also acted in his directorial debut, The Fallen Idol (1913). He later became known for his historical-biographical films, including Life Story of David Lloyd George (1918).
Having already seen a later British silent of Nelson (1926), I was fearing the worst, but Maurice Elvey attaches enough finesse to Nelson (1918) to actually make it a respectable biopic of Lord Nelson's life.
