Adlai Ewing Stevenson II (February 5, 1900 – July 14, 1965) was an American statesman and politician. He was known for his intellectual demeanor and advocacy of liberal causes in the Democratic party. From young adulthood, Stevenson had an interest and passion for foreign affairs.
His grandson, Adlai E. Stevenson II, served as governor of Illinois and was nominated as the Democratic candidate for President in 1952 and 1956, losing both times to Dwight Eisenhower. His great-grandson, Adlai E. Stevenson III, served as a senator for Illinois, twice ran for governor, and was himself considered a contender for the vice presidential nomination in 1976.
When the 1,372 delegates to the Democratic Party’s national convention gathered in Chicago on August 13th, 1956, Adlai E. Stevenson was a sure thing for the nomination as the Party’s candidate against the incumbent President Eisenhower.
