Messe fought in the Italian conquest of Libya in 1911. He took part in the conquest of Abyssinia, the invasion of Albania and the disastrous invasion of Greece.

Giovanni Messe was born near Brindisi. A veteran of WW1, in the next great war he led Italian troops in Ethiopia, Albania, and Greece. From 17 Jul 1941 to 9 Jul 1942, he led a corps of Italian soldiers ( Corpo di Spedizione Italiano in Rùssia) in the Eastern Front. During the fighting in Russia, he received the Knight's Cross on 23 Jan 1942.
