  4. Walter Marty Schirra, Jr., was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, on March 12, 1923, son of Walter M. and Florence (Leach) Schirra. He attended Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, New Jersey and Newark (New Jersey) College of Engineering, for one year, prior to entering the U. S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, on appointment from the Seventh District of his native state in 1942.
