A white dwarf produces no new heat of its own, so it gradually cools over billions of years. Despite the name, white dwarfs can emit visible light that ranges from blue white to red. Scientists sometimes find that white dwarfs are surrounded by dusty disks of material, debris, and even planets – leftovers from the original star’s red giant phase.

White dwarfs are believed to have a surface temperature of less than 10,000 Kelvin and, if that’s the case, a planet as close as 0.005 to 0.02 AU (Astronomical Unit) could potentially be habitable for life to develop.

4 de dic. de 2007 · Details. NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope is providing strong evidence that white dwarfs, the burned-out relics of stars, are given a “kick” when they form. The sharp vision of Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys uncovered the speedy white dwarfs in the ancient globular star cluster NGC 6397, a dense swarm of hundreds of thousands of stars.
