Annie Girardot había nacido en París el 25 de octubre de 1931, de una relación adúltera, el padre nunca la reconoció, y murió cuando ella tenía dos años, la madre era comadrona. Estudió para enfermera, pero el gusanillo de la interpretación prendió en ella, e ingresó en el Conservatorio de la rue Blanche, de modo que en 1954 se sumaba a la compañía de teatro de la Comedia Francesa.
