Once praised by Jia as “the genius narrator passing down the memories of a nation through films,” Hou Hsiao-hsien, at age 68, has made his first wuxia film. Its long and arduous production (adhering to a $15 million budget) began shortly after Flight of the Red Balloon was released in 2008, leaving the longest gap in the Taiwanese filmmaker’s career since his first feature in 1980.

Sometime around 1983, the writer Chu T’ien-wen, who would later become one of Hou’s closest and most frequent collaborators, gave the filmmaker a copy, thinking that he shared a certain sensibility with Shen.

A progenitor of the New Taiwan Cinema movement, he cemented his reputation with a series of films in the 80s that rejected the escapist fantasies, martial arts movies and melodramas dominant in Taiwan in favour of a realistic filmmaking style deeply concerned with local culture.
Hou Hsiao-hsien (chiń. upr. 侯孝贤; chiń. trad. 侯孝賢; pinyin Hóu Xiàoxián; ur. 8 kwietnia 1947 w Meixian w Chinach) – tajwański reżyser, scenarzysta i producent filmowy, wielokrotnie nagradzany na międzynarodowych festiwalach filmowych.
