Adlai Stevenson’s Early Upbringing. Adlai Stevenson was born in 1900 into a family that, if it was not excessively wealthy, seemed to want for very little. The Chicago Sun-Times reports his son, Adlai Stevenson IV, confirmed the Democrat's death and said his father had dementia. Before his health declined, Mr. Stevenson kept active organizing presentations and speakers for the Adlai Stevenson Center on Democracy in Libertyville, Illinois.
