Nacido en Milán, el 23 de diciembre de 1923, Dino Risi estaba destinado a seguir los pasos de su padre, un reconocido médico, y estudió medicina para complacerle, en la rama de psiquiatría. Pero aunque ejerció durante una temporada, su verdadera vocación era el cine y enseguida estaba aprendiendo el oficio, como ayudante de los maestros Mario Soldati y Alberto Lattuada .

Together with Mario Monicelli, Luigi Comencini, and Ettore Scola, Risi (1916–2008) enjoyed tremendous commercial and critical success during “Il Boom,” the Italian economic miracle of the 1950s and 1960s.
