  3. Elisabeth Welch, singer, was born in New York. As a member of her church choir she found herself drawn into musical theatre and throughout the 1920s appeared in a succession of Black Broadway shows at the height of the jazz age. In 1923 she was pulled out of the choir to sing ‘Charleston’ in Runnin' Wild, thus launching the famous dance craze.
