I had serious doubts before seeing a 3 hour 39 minute version of Bernardo Bertolucci’s Last Emperor, thinking perhaps an already indolent film was to become absolutely, luxuriantly, corrupted.. How wrong I was. The director’s cut is surely a richer, rounder film, made to the true rhythm of another time and culture.
