Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. At a small church in rural Idaho, a preacher ( Clint Eastwood) is conducting a Sunday service when a man comes in and starts shooting at him. He escapes, with the aid of Lightfoot ( Jeff Bridges ), a car thief who happens to be driving by and helps him by running over his pursuer and giving him a lift.
Young drifter Bridges hooks up with ex-thief Eastwood, who has been on the run from his former partners for several years because they believe he set them up and took off with the loot from a government vault they robbed in Montana. The two remaining members of his gang, Kennedy, and Lewis, are in pursuit of revenge and hot on Eastwood's tail.

Thunderbolt tells Lightfoot that the ones trying to kill him are members of his gang who mistakenly think Thunderbolt double-crossed them. Thunderbolt is the only member of the gang who knows where the loot is hidden. He and Lightfoot journey to Warsaw, Montana, to retrieve the money hidden in an old one-room school.
