Paulette Goddard was born Pauline Marion Levee in Whitestone Landing, Long Island, in 1905, and went to work at age 14, shortly after the breakup of her parents' marriage. Reportedly, an uncle used his influence to get her a job with producer Flo Ziegfeld, who billed her as Peaches Browning ( Frances Heenan ) in his 1926 hit No Fooling.

Paulette, a divorceé in her early 20's, would be the oldest of his wives and the only divorceé. Paulette was doing bit work in films when she met Charlie at a party given by a friend of Chaplin's.

Actress Claire Trevor (born in March 1910), went to high school with her and always maintained Paulette was a year older than her. Most sources, however, give her birth date as June 3, 1910 so we shall stick with that.
