Biography. Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun was one of the foremost portraitists in Europe at the end of the eighteenth century and during the first three decades of the nineteenth. She belonged to the long succession of European courtier-artists that began with Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) and closed with John Singer Sargent (1856-1925).
On 30 March 1842, Élisabeth Louis Vigée Le Brun passed away at 99 Rue Saint-Lazare, Paris. Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun was one of the great portrait artists of her day, easily the equal of Quentin de La Tour or Jean Baptiste Greuze. Born into relatively modest circumstances, she firmly established herself in society’s upper crust.
