Oświęcim (Auschwitz en alemán) es una población cercana a Katowice, en la confluencia de los ríos Vístula y Sola, en la Alta Silesia. Esta región había sido cedida a Polonia en el Tratado de Versalles (1919) y en 1940 tenía unos 1400 habitantes; la mitad de ellos, judíos.
