The lyrics discuss the artificiality of rock music, political issues, drug use, sexuality and stardom. The musical tells the story of Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman in Tsarist Russia, who struggles to maintain his cultural and religious traditions while his daughters seek to marry for love.
