Nude Ants is a live album by American pianist Keith Jarrett recorded at the Village Vanguard in New York City in May 1979 and released on ECM a year later. The quartet—Jarrett's "European Quartet"—features saxophonist Jan Garbarek and rhythm section Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen.
Garbarek shines in “Oasis,” his reed shawm-like and opaque, as he wrenches out some of his most ecstatic high notes on record. Out of this measured catharsis Jarrett waters his colors in a solo tour de force.
The track becomes bogged down into an undisciplined morass of flailing piano, over-pitched saxophone and turgid rhythm. Innocence is an example of the beauty and excitement Jarrett can produce, helped perhaps by the more concise nature of the piece. "Nude Ants" is a true classic in Keith Jarrett's prolific live recordings. With his "European" Quartet, Jarrett released some very fine albums ("belonging," "personal mountains"), one brilliant record ("my song")before moving onto a Standards trio, more solo improv, and classical work in the 80's.
