Red Alert's original line-up — Steve 'Cast Iron' Smith (vocals), Tony Van Frater (guitar), Gaz Stuart (bass) and Dona (drums) — debuted in the summer of 1979, at a carnival in Sunderland, performing mostly Clash and UK Subs covers.

10 de sept. de 2018 · Since then there’s been the sad death of mainstay Tony Van Frater (also later of the Rejects) and relocations to Catalonia, but singer Steve ‘Cast Iron’ Smith’s voice and anger remains undiminished as the band prepares to mark 40 years on the road.
Tony Van Frater died in October 2015 from a heart attack at the age of 51. In February 2016, it was announced that former Cockney Reject bass player Vince Riordan had re-joined the band again.
Tony Van Frater (Red Alert) was Mensi's main songwriting partner for the Sons of Spartacus album in 2002. In August 2006, Mensi announced he was resigning, but requested that the band continue with Chris Wright (of the band Crashed Out) on vocals.
