Sir Joseph Terry JP (7 January 1828 – 12 January 1898) was a British confectioner, industrialist and Conservative politician who served as Lord Mayor of York on three occasions.
Joseph Terry was a British confectioner who founded Terry's of York in 1828. He produced a variety of candies, cakes and lozenges, and became a leader in the industry and a social reformer.
Joseph Terry, who was born in Pocklington, came to York to serve as an apprentice apothecary in Stonegate, before setting up shop as a chemist in Walmgate. His life took a different turn in 1823 when he married Harriet Atkinson, a relative of Robert Berry who had a small confectionery business.

Joseph Terry was born in Pocklington in 1793 the son of a local baker. He grew up in the town before moving to York and starting out in business as an apothecary, then switching to making cakes and confectioneries.

He had previously served as a deputy mayor through his role as town sheriff in 1870, and served as Councillor for York's Monk Ward from 1860 until this appointment.
