Empires' guitarist Marty Sanders (né Kupersmith) joined the group. He brought David Black (né Blatt) of "The Empires" in to take Traynor's place (after David first agreed to adopt the name Jay Black), and Black sang lead for the rest of the group's major hits. They recorded "Only in America", a song originally meant for The Drifters.

In 1969, Jay and The Americans: Kenny Vance, Marty Sanders, Jay Black and Sandy Yaguda produced their first album – “Sands Of Time” for their own company – JATA (For Jay and The Americans) Enterprises, consisting of oldies.
While minus a lead, The Americans sang backup vocals on Bobby Goldsboro’s “See The Funny Little Clown” Marty Sanders who had been with the group off & on as a guitar/background vocalist (on salary for live gigs ) and who had also sung some backup on the “She Cried” album was now a full member of the group.
