Más allá de Neptuno, el planeta más distante del Sistema Solar, se encuentra una serie de objetos cósmicos y cuerpos helados que se engloban bajo el nombre de cinturón de Kuiper (en honor del astrónomo Gerard Kuiper que predijo en 1951 su existencia).
La «X» de la denominación se refería a que el planeta permanecía desconocido o incógnito, no al número romano 10, ya que solo había ocho planetas conocidos en los tiempos de la búsqueda del Planeta X.
