James "Jem" Mace (8 April 1831 – 30 November 1910) was an English boxing champion, primarily during the bare-knuckle era. He was born at Beeston, Norfolk. Although nicknamed "The Gypsy", he denied Romani ethnicity in his autobiography.

This bout was promoted as the Heavyweight Championship of England, the men wore six ounce gloves and fought two minute rounds. Mace was very critical of Mitchell and other British heavyweights so Mitchell fought him to shut him up. Police intervened.
Jem Mace brought a more scientific style of fighting to the ring than did most of his predecessors. Before making fighting his career, Mace worked as an apprentice cabinetmaker and as a fiddler. He defeated Slasher Slack in his first professional fight in 1855.
