James John Corbett (September 1, 1866 – February 18, 1933) was an American professional boxer and a World Heavyweight Champion, best known as the only man who ever defeated John L. Sullivan (hence the "man who beat the man" concept of the championship boxing lineage).

James J. Corbett was an American world heavyweight boxing champion from September 7, 1892, when he knocked out John L. Sullivan in 21 rounds at New Orleans, until March 17, 1897, when he was knocked out by Robert Fitzsimmons in 14 rounds at Carson City, Nevada.
James John Corbett has been called the "Father of Modern Boxing" because of his innovations that changed prizefighting from a brawl to a scientific art-form. Corbett won the World Heavyweight Championship by knocking out John L. Sullivan in the 21st round on September 7, 1892.
