Féral Benga. François "Féral" Benga (8 July 1906 – 13 September 1957) was a Senegalese dancer and became a sought after model of the Harlem Renaissance, his portraits and sculptures taken by Carl Van Vechten, Richmond Barthé and George Platt Lynes among others.

10 de ago. de 2021 · The Senegalese cabaret dancer François Benga, better known by his stage name Féral — French for “untamed” — emerged on the scene in the 1930s as a darling of the Parisian music hall scene.
Feral Benga has been described as "Barthé's signature piece." It portrays François (a.k.a. Feral) Benga, a Senegalese cabaret dancer, who, like his female counterpart Josephine Baker, created a sensation on the Paris stage with his "carnal choreography often set in steamy and distant places."
Benga's role as a dancer and artist's model lays bare the extent to which African and African American artists have played a central, rather than peripheral, role in the formation, as well as the deformation, of modernism and primitivism.
