John William Maule Ramsay, 13th Earl of Dalhousie, KT , PC (29 January 1847 – 25 November 1887), styled Lord Ramsay between 1874 and 1880, was a Scottish naval commander, courtier and Liberal politician. By the 13th century there were five major branches of the Clan Ramsay: the Ramsays of Dalhousie, the Ramsays of Auchterhouse, the Ramsays of Banff, the Ramsay of Forfar and the Ramsays of Clatto. [2] . In 1255, during the minority of Alexander III of Scotland, William de Ramsay of Dalhousie was a member of the king's council. [2]
History. The family descends from Sir George Ramsay, who represented Kincardineshire in the Scottish Parliament in 1617. He received a charter of the barony of Dalhousie and also of the barony of Melrose on the resignation of John Ramsay, 1st Earl of Holderness. In 1618 he was raised to the Peerage of Scotland as Lord Ramsay of Melrose.
VI of Scotland. In 1600 this John saved the Kings life by killing the Earl of Gowrie, who in the famous “Gowrie Conspiracy” was plotting to kidnap the King. As a reward John was granted the titles of Earl of Holderness and Viscount Haddington by King James. In 1633 George’s son William was raised to Earl of Dalhousie and Lord Ramsay
