Sir William Frederick Cotton CBE (23 April 1928 – 11 August 2008) was a British television producer and executive, and the son of dance band leader Billy Cotton. The television and radio presenter Fearne Cotton is related to him, as he was her paternal grandfather's cousin.
Sir Bill Cotton, who has died aged 80, was managerially responsible for many of the BBC's most loved and enduring programmes in its 1960s and 70s golden age of comedy.
As the BBC’s head of light entertainment from 1970 to ’77 and controller of BBC1 from 1977-81, Cotton presided over a golden age in British television. His tenure saw the arrival of popular favourites including The Morecombe & Wise Show, The Generation Game, Parkinson and The Two Ronnies.

Bill Cotton was the son of bandleader Billy Cotton and a TV producer who brought The Generation Game, The Two Ronnies and Dad's Army to the screen. He also commissioned Top of the Pops, The Frost Report and Dee Time, and was a master of showcasing star talent.
