John Singer Sargent was one of the leading portraits painters of his generation, creating images of Edwardian Era high society. A prolific artist, he produced around 900 oil paintings, over 2,000 watercolors and even more sketches and preliminary studies.
Picturesque locales prompted Sargent to paint genre scenes, which he showed alongside his portraits as he built his reputation. Some of his sun-drenched canvases of the late 1870s bespeak the influence of Claude Monet, whom Sargent seems to have met in Paris as early as 1876 at the second Impressionist exhibition.
Sargent, born in Italy to American parents and educated in Germany and France, possessed a keen eye for regional social conventions. As the premier society portrait painter of his day, Sargent instinctively knew what pose, attire, and mood to suggest in London, New York, or Boston.

Pintor estadounidense. Nacido en el seno de una adinerada familia americana que vivía en Europa desde 1854, Sargent, tras asistir unos meses en 1873 a las clases de la Academia de Bellas Artes de Florencia, se formó en París con Carolus Duran, a cuyo taller asistió entre 1874 y 1879.
