Sir George Hayter (17 December 1792 – 18 January 1871) was an English painter, specialising in portraits and large works involving sometimes several hundred individual portraits. Queen Victoria appreciated his merits and appointed Hayter her Principal Painter in Ordinary and also awarded him a Knighthood in 1841.
Before his appointment as Queen Victoria’s ‘Painter of History and Portrait’ in 1837, George Hayter had impressed the young Princess with his skill as a portraitist and helped her with her first attempts at oil painting.

George Hayter (1792–1871) University of Wales Trinity Saint David. (b London, 17 Dec. 1792; d London, 18 Jan. 1871). English historical and portrait painter. The son of a miniaturist, Charles Hayter (1761–1835), he studied at the Royal Academy Schools and in Rome.
