Christiaan Huygens (/'krɪstja:n 'hœyxəns/ ⓘ La Haya, 14 de abril de 1629-La Haya, 8 de julio de 1695) fue un astrónomo, físico, matemático e inventor neerlandés.

Originally a preliminary chapter of his Dioptrica, Huygens's theory was published in 1690 under the title Traité de la Lumière (Treatise on light), and contains the first fully mathematized, mechanistic explanation of an unobservable physical phenomenon (i.e., light propagation).
