The Old Babylonian contracts found at Nippur during the 1888-1901 excavations of the University of Pennsylvania Expedition are housed in the Archeological Museum in Istanbul, in the Hilprecht Collection in Jena, and in the University Museum in Philadelphia.
This research project aims to provide editions and translations of all known Old Babylonian Model Contracts. The project is directed by Gabriella Spada.
The so-called "model contracts" were part of the first stage of the scribal curriculum in the Old Babylonian school. They were used to train the scribes in the formal patterns of the administration and the law.
The book contains the code of Hammurabi, the prologue and epilogue, letters by Hammurabi and other political leaders, as well as a detailed discussion of the historical and legal background of Babylonian and Assyrian laws. Read Now
