First produced in 1952, the House of Cards is a beloved staple of the Eames Office. Each deck of cards contains a myriad of fun designs. Each card comes with six notches to allow for creative building and endless fun.
Charles and Ray Eames designed the House of Cards in the 1950s. These picture card decks have become universal favorites with such fame and renown that they are even represented in museum collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
The Eameses designed the original House of Cards in 1952, exemplifying the design duo’s appreciation for the uncommon beauty of common things. The deck consists of fifty-four playing-sized cards, each card with six slots, two on either side and one at both ends, so they may be locked together to create three-dimensional structures.
The Eameses designed many different boxes for House of Cards over the years. This early mock-up for one of them mirrors the title card included in the Picture Deck. The colorful cut-paper rectangles are marked with carefully inked letters and serve as evidence of Ray’s hands-on process.
