The Phantom is a fictional costumed crime-fighter who operates from the fictional country of Bangalla originally Bengali. The character was created by Lee Falk for the adventure comic strip The Phantom, which debuted in newspapers on February 17, 1936.
The origin story began with Christopher Standish, who once served as Christopher Columbus' cabin boy, now acting as captain of a commerce vessel attacked by pirates. His young son, Kit, the sole survivor of the ordeal, sees his father slain by the pirate leader.
The strip was launched June 11, 1934 with Davis illustrating and Falk scripting. One of Davis' assistants was Ray Moore, who later became the first artist on Falk's other comic strip, The Phantom, also distributed by King Features.
After working up ideas for the continuation of the strip, he decided that he could not keep up with drawing it himself so he approached an older artist by the name of Phil Davis (b. March 4, 1906), who was also from St.Louis.
