Fifteen to twenty years prior to the events of the episode, he was a regular bear who lived in the Park Zoo. One day, out of nowhere, he attacked and killed his trainer. The zoo was forced to close down, most likely because of the incident, but Death Bear wouldn't leave.
While picking, Rigby tells them the legend of the fabled Death Bear, a psychotic bear at the old zoo who murdered his trainers and supposedly haunts the zoo's ruins. Mordecai says it's nothing more than an urban legend, which makes them believe he's scared at Death bear.
