The building's facade detailing, constructed of cut, carved, and molded red brick, represents Richardson's interpretation of the Romanesque style.

Sever Hall is noted for the extensive use of carved and molded brick shapes and has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The building was funded as a bequest of Anne E. P. Sever.
Unlike Matthews and Weld halls (see HY7), built during the early 1870s, with vertical massing and picturesque rooflines, Sever Hall is a quiet, horizontal structure, closer in sensibility to the Georgian buildings, relatively restrained, but not austere.
