TL:DR, Jackson and the others died from the helicopter crash. Volker and Vasquez from blunt trauma, Jackson from blood loss due to injuries(in the original, all 3 of bloodloss in the remaster). The actual damage from the nuke itself was perfectly survivable with medical treatment.

It sees the player controlling the American protagonist Sgt. Paul Jackson crawling around the crash site in the aftermath of a nuclear explosion. Jackson eventually collapses and dies from his wounds.
