The independent possessive pronouns are mine, ours, yours, his, hers, its, and theirs. The possessive adjectives, also called possessive determiners, are my, our, your, his, her, its, and their. We break down each type and offer examples of their usage below.
In English, the possessive pronouns are: mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs. I have a bag - this is mine. You have a cat - that cat is yours. He has a car - it is his. She has a book - it is hers. We have a flat - it is ours. They have a daughter - she is theirs.
There are two types: possessive pronouns and possessive determiners. We use possessive determiners before a noun. We use possessive pronouns in place of a noun: Is that [determiner] your scarf? It’s very similar to [pronoun] mine. (It’s very similar to my scarf.) That’s not [determiner] their house. [pronoun] Theirs has got a red front door.
