Particles that break away during weathering are transported and deposited as layers of soil on land, or layers of sediment underwater. Soils have layers called horizons . Soil horizons are distinguished by various properties, including color, texture, mineral content, and organic content.
The soil profile has four distinct layers: 1) O horizon; 2) A horizon; 3) B horizon, or subsoil; and 4) C horizon, or soil base (Figure \(\PageIndex{2}\)). The O horizon has freshly decomposing organic matter—humus—at its surface, with decomposed vegetation at its base.

These layers are called soil horizons. The arrangement of these horizons in a soil is known as a soil profile. Soil scientists, who are also called pedologists, observe and describe soil profiles and soil horizons to classify and interpret the soil for various uses.
A soil horizon is a layer parallel to the soil surface whose physical, chemical and biological characteristics differ from the layers above and beneath. Horizons are defined in many cases by obvious physical features, mainly colour and texture.
