The Ethel Barrymore Theatre is a Broadway theater at 243 West 47th Street in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Opened in 1928, it was designed by Herbert J. Krapp in the Elizabethan, Mediterranean, and Adam styles for the Shubert family.
A gift to Barrymore, a member of the illustrious Barrymore acting dynasty, the Ethel Barrymore Theatre is the only surviving theatre of the many Lee and J.J. Shubert built for their affiliated performers.
Opening that December with The Kingdom of God, the Barrymore Theatre is the sole remaining venue named for Broadway moguls the Shubert brothers’ affiliated performers. The Barrymore Theatre has housed revivals, small dramas and star-studded performances thanks to its intimate but grand design.
