29 de nov. de 2017 · Despite attempts in the last century to erase or deny the importance of their art, the sisters Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh (1864-1933) and Frances Macdonald (1873-1921) created a unique style in fin de siècle Glasgow worthy of critical attention.
In the early 1890s, the creative talents of the Macdonald sisters and McNair were fostered in the hothouse atmosphere of the Glasgow School of Art, a progressive institution that offered an innovative curriculum and welcomed female students.
Margaret and Frances MacDonald, among history’s all-but-forgotten characters, were also among the artists to establish the aesthetic principles of Art Nouveau. There’s very nearly an essential femininity to Art Nouveau.
Frances MacDonald MacNair was the sister of Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh, another renowned artist and designer. She was born in Kidsgrove, England and the family moved to Glasgow in 1890.
