I had my rods in for about 1 year 6 months before the removal surgery. I am two weeks post op and everything feel great so far! I also had a balloon kyphoplasty at the same time as the removal to help strengthen the fractured vertebrae.

They do help to hold things in place while the body heals, and they are typically meant to stay in the body forever. There are cases, though, when removing metal plates and screws, or other implants, may be necessary.
6 de jun. de 2022 · As for my knee it stiff but improving and there is pain just below the knee cap due to one of the screws at the top of the rod that was inserted through my tibia. My surgeon said that can be removed easily in an outpatient procedure, a 15 minute operation, so I’m thinking of asking him about that.
Tibial fractures are the most common long bone fracture. 1 The method of fracture treatment depends on the characteristics of the fracture and on surgeon preference. Currently methods used include casting, plate fixation, external fixation and intramedullary nailing.
Once the bone has fully healed, the rod/nail no longer serves a purpose and may be removed. This is typically done a year after the original surgery and can be an outpatient procedure (i.e., the patient does not stay in the hospital overnight after surgery).

The recovery timeline varies significantly depending on the type of surgery performed, overall health and age of the patient, and how well the patient adheres to post-operative care instructions.
