Steve Earle wurde am 17. Januar 1955 als Sohn eines Fluglotsen in Ft. Monroe, Virginia, geboren. Schon als 14-Jähriger spielte er in den „Coffeehouses“ in San Antonio, Texas.Nach eigener Aussage wurde er hier von der Hippie- und Anti-Vietnamkriegsbewegung in seiner Weltanschauung geprägt.
