Als Regina Spektor neun Jahre alt war, wanderten ihre jüdischen Eltern, eine Musiklehrerin und ein Fotograf, mit ihr aufgrund des Antisemitismus in der Sowjetunion über Österreich und Italien in die USA aus. Sie wuchs in der New Yorker Bronx auf, und nach einer Ausbildung in klassischer Musik nahm sie 2001 ihr erstes, selbst produziertes Album 11:11 mit eigenen Liedern auf.

Biografi. Regina Spektor kommer från en musikalisk judisk familj. Hennes far, som arbetar som fotograf, är amatörviolinist och hennes mor musikprofessor, numera lärare på en skola i Mount Vernon, New York.Efternamnet Spektor kommer från ryskans инспектор (”inspektör”), en titel som gav judar vissa privilegier i det gamla ryska samhället.
