Benjamin (Ben) Jonson ( Westminster, Londen, ± 11 juni 1572 – aldaar, 6 augustus 1637) was een toneelschrijver, dichter en acteur uit de Engelse renaissance. Als tijdgenoot van William Shakespeare is hij vooral bekend om zijn satirische toneelstukken Volpone, The Alchemist, en Bartholomew Fair, die worden beschouwd als zijn beste werken.

Ben Jonson was born around June 11, 1572, the posthumous son of a clergyman. He was educated at Westminster School by the great classical scholar William Camden and worked in his stepfather's trade, bricklaying. The trade did not please him in the least, and he joined the army, serving in Flanders.

20 de jul. de 2020 · Until the last few decades, attention to Ben Jonson’s ( 1572-1637) poetry focused largely on the famous songs and the moving epitaphs on children. Such choices were not ill-advised, but they are unrepresentative. The works in these modes certainly rank among Jonson’s most successful, but they differ in tone from Jonson’s norm.
Jonson był autorem wszechstronnym, w niełaskę popadł wraz ze wstąpieniem na tron króla Karola I w 1625.
