He joined the band in time for their biggest album, 1980's Back In Black , and as AC/DC shifted from theatres to arenas, and from arenas to stadiums, he led the way.

Bon Scott, the lead singer and lyricist of the Australian rock band AC/DC died at 33. The band auditioned singers, among them Johnson, whom Scott himself had seen perform and raved about.

At 32 he was feeling washed up. Recently separated from his wife, Johnson was living at his parents’ house in Gateshead, running a small car-repair enterprise and struggling to get by.
