12 Angry Men, the Henry Fonda version made in 1957 has always been my favourite film, due to many factors. I have just watched 12 Angry Men, the 1997 remake, with Jack Lemmon. Being an absolute fan of Henry Fonda, and his own 1957 Produced version, directed by Sidney Lumet, I was not expecting what I experienced on screen.
12 Angry Men was a delightfully and surprisingly insightful movie. As a member of the audience watching the film, it was exhilarating to see the protagonist make progress through his arguments and I found myself rooting for him, waiting to see what he would do next.
Although Sidney Lumet’s 1957 film may be the most famous version, 12 Angry Men actually started out as a teleplay, which Reginald Rose subsequently adapted for the theatre and cinema. Released in 1997, William Friedkin’s telemovie aims to get back to that original moment, if only to open up the story for a new generation.
