James Whale (22 July 1889 – 29 May 1957) was an English film director, theatre director and actor. He is best remembered for his work in the horror film genre, having directed Frankenstein (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Invisible Man (1933) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935), all recognized as classics of the genre.
James Whale directed some of the most stylish and unusual movies of the 1930s, but he was most successful in a genre he virtually invented. For it was Whale who, in 1931, took a lanky, middle-aged actor and sometimes truck driver named Boris Karloff and cast him in one of the most widely-seen films in the history of the cinema--as the tragic, patchwork creature of "Frankenstein".
