Badham ist der Sohn des US-amerikanischen Generals Henry Lee Badham Jr. (1892–1978) [1] und dessen Frau, der englischen Schauspielerin Mary Iola Badham geb. Hewitt (1916–1971). [2] Beide übersiedelten in die USA, als John zehn Jahre alt war. Er ist der ältere Bruder der bereits in den USA geborenen Schauspielerin Mary Badham (* 1952).

John Badham suit ensuite les cours de l’université de Yale, avant d’être embauché à la fin des années 60 à la télévision. Au cours des années 70, il se fait la main en tant que réalisateur sur de nombreux épisodes de séries télévisées et des téléfilms, ce qui lui a permis d’accumuler une bonne expérience.
Badham worked in television for years, before his breakthrough in 1977 with Saturday Night Fever, a massive worldwide hit starring John Travolta. WarGames (1983), starring Matthew Broderick, is his other signature film, renowned for its take on popular Cold War fears of nuclear terror, and holocaust, as well as being one of the first films to deal with the subculture of amateur hacking.
