Dado que necesitaba fondos, decidió trabajar como mercenario para Artabazo II, sátrapa de la Frigia Helespóntica que se había rebelado contra la autoridad del rey aqueménida Artajerjes III cuando éste ordenó su destitución por desconfiar del ejército que había reunido.
