In the 2016 book titled TV (The Book), film and television critic Matt Zoller Seitz stated that the series gave Garner "the role he was put on earth to play".

It lacks the satirical sharpness, witty dialogues, and engaging and less straightforward plot development that marked his debut. The Gardener’s Year was staged by Donart Production and co-produced by Czech Television.
